The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday suspended the notification related to the confirmation in the extension period of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years.

It may be mentioned here that the tenure of the incumbent army chief is due to expire on November 29.

Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa has converted a petition seeking to dismiss a case against the extension of COAS Bajwa into a suo-moto.

The CJP during the case hearing remarked “Converting petition to suo-moto notice under 184(3) clause of the constitution.”

Sources disclosed that the judiciary boss asserted that “The petition is hand-written sans any undertaking and also both the petitioner and the advocate were absent in the court. So, in these circumstances, we cannot hear the petition.”

The chief justice further stated that the authority for extending the tenure of the army chief rests with the President only not even with the Prime Minister.

In response to this, the attorney general told the court that the notification of the extension had been issued after approval by President Arif Alvi.
